guide to village of Wae Rebo | natural beauty hidden between the beaches on the island of Bali

Visit Wae Rebo, a World Heritage Village that won a UNESCO award village with a unique "village on a cloud" design

A guide to the village of Wae Rebo is very important before you decide to go on an adventure vacation to the countryside of Indonesia because public transportation is almost non-existent.

You can travel by truck or boat, but realistically you have to travel by car or motorcycle. the last village that can be accessed by public transportation is Denge, the nearest village, a 3-hour drive from Labuan Bajo.

Labuan Bajo one of the villages with beautiful and famous beaches on the island of Komodo. Then when you arrive at Denge you must find a guide to take you to the wae Rebo village

what Beautiful  needs to be known about wae Rebo village

Wae Rebo Village in Flores, located at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level. Wae Rebo Village is a historical place which was a UNESCO world cultural heritage site in 2012

Wae Rebo is completely surrounded by beautiful mountains: Todo's tropical forest is rich in orchid vegetation, various types of ferns, here you will find and hear the song of many songbirds.

The landscape is in the form of mountains and there are only 7 traditional cone houses that will give a different impression to every visitor who has ever come to Wae Rebo Village.

The main characteristic of Wae Rebo is their unique home, which they call Mbaru Niang, which is tall and conical in shape and is completely covered in ejection from its roof to the ground.

It seems that at one time such a house was quite common in the area. But today, only this village continues to maintain traditional Manggarai houses, without which these unique houses would be completely disrupted.

Each house has five levels, designated for specific purposes. The first level, called later or tent, is a large family residence.

The second level, called Lobo, or attic, is set aside to store food and goods, the third level called lender is to save seeds for the next harvest, the fourth level called lempa rae is reserved for food supplies in draft cases, and the fifth and upper levels, which called hiking code, which is considered the most sacred, is to place offerings for the ancestors

How to get to Wae Rebo village

Several options for going to Wae Rebo from Labuan Bajo

  • a) If you travel with a team: It is more convenient and cheaper to do an organized tour with a choice of prices
  • b) If you are a true adventurer who likes to travel alone and can ride a motorcycle: You can go directly to Wae Rebo from Labuan Bajo. To try this, make sure you are truly confident and comfortable with the motorbike because some roads are narrow and not paved. Get travel insurance before you go (I highly recommend Wanderers - one of the best out there). If you need a break from a long journey, or if you arrive late at night, you can spend the night in Denge. Before you go, you should ask the local community about "AdventureViv" has a comprehensive guide on how to drive from Labuan Bajo to Denge.
  • c) If you’re short on time, you can make a day trip on a motorbike from Ruteng (on your own or with a hired driver). Start early if you don’t want to drive in the dark on the way back.
  • c) If you are traveling alone and cannot ride a motorcycle:
  1. Day 1 - Take a public bus/taxi together from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng. Spend the night at Ruteng.
  2. Day 2 - Take a public bus from Ruteng to Denge. Hike to Wae Rebo and spend the night there.
  3. Day 3 - Breakfast at Wae Rebo. Climb to Denge. Spend the night at Denge.
  4. Day 4 - Get an early morning bus back to Ruteng
To get here must pass a very heavy road. This trip takes around 2.5 hours through a tropical rain forest. The road is humid so that it can have a small impact on some people.

My advice about the Preparations Needed:

1. Before going here, do a morning walk with the 2-3x route than usual. It is important that the leg muscles first be far away.

2. Use clothes that are thick, easy to tangle, and easily dry. Avoid using a thick jacket when trekking because it will add weight and increase space. You will not be cold because sweat will flow profusely along the way.
3. Bring a thin raincoat or windbreaker and a small towel or buff to clean sweat.
4. Bring snacks and cocoa beans, useful to increase energy, and save space.
5. Use special trekking shoes if available. In addition to being more than a solid footing on steep terrain and rocks, this place is also protected from pacet which saves a lot of things.
6. Do not use pants made from jeans, use pants made from comfortable and not tight.

The most difficult route is from post 1 to post 2. While heading 2 to post 3 is slightly sloping and fewer but still, be careful because of the deepest ravines and some simple paths on this path.

But all this effort paid off with the look and atmosphere found in the village of Waerebo. For nature and forest lovers.

how to find lodging in Wae Rebo?

You will not find lodging here. As for facilities, in Denge Village there is a residence that can be used to stay overnight.

Not far from the homestay there is an information center and library. When you arrive at Wae Rebo Village, you can hitch a ride in a traditional house belonging to the local community if you want to spend the night.

Here there is no homestay or special lodging because it only consists of 7 traditional houses, called Mbaru Niang. Made of wood with a thatched roof. Mbaru Niang’s shape is pursed upwards, a traditional architecture that is very unique.
